What’s one piece of advice I’d give myself when I was first getting started in the music industry?

Make discovering and working with talent a higher priority than taking on projects just for a paycheck. Your work will only be as good as the artists you collaborate with. With great talent you’ll make great art and great art stands out and attracts listeners.

It's a challenge when you’re first getting started because first and foremost you have to pay the bills. When you’re in that position you’ll take on any and every project that pays. Try to find ways to take on projects that will sustain your business while also taking on a few that you truly believe in even if you need to work a part time job because there’s little or no pay.

Investing in select projects will not only build a great sounding body of work but also attract other quality talent and it will just compound from there.

I always love the ease of tracking drums with @chrisbrushdrums over at @plethoratone. I just show up to a prepped project file, share my ideas regarding parts and sounds, capture a few passes of great playing and then walk away a couple of hours later with amazing sounding tracks on a thumbdrive.

Setting up for drum overdubs is a pain (especially for a single) but this approach is always painless. Last week I dropped by to cut some drums on a new @ryanglantmusic single.
